Where can I find a lactation consultant who accepts Meridian Medicaid in Illinois?

Lumaea Wellness provides virtual lactation education and support for eligible Meridian Medicaid members in Illinois. If you're looking for a lactation counselor who accepts Meridian Medicaid, you can review the available services and request an appointment online.

How much does lactation support cost with Meridian Medicaid?

For eligible Meridian Medicaid members, covered lactation education and support services are provided at no cost to you. You do not need to pay Lumaea Wellness out of pocket for a covered service.

Do I need to have Meridian Medicaid to use Lumaea's lactation services?

Meridian Medicaid is currently the only insurance that Lumaea Wellness is able to accept. We are in the process of contracting with other Medicaid MCOs in Illinois, but it is a long process. We will update when we can accept other insurance providers.

How do I know if my Meridian Medicaid benefit covers my lactation appointment??

Lumaea Wellness will verify your insurance information and eligibility before providing covered services. Having Meridian Medicaid does not necessarily mean every service or situation is automatically covered, so insurance verification is part of the process.

In general, lactation education and support is a covered service for those who are pregnant and postpartum at any point during pregnancy or within one year after birth, with a few exceptions. If the birthing parent does not qualify for Medicaid, but the infant does, Lumaea can verify that the child's Meridian Medicaid covers lactation support for the dyad.

Do I need a referral from my doctor to receive lactation services?

Usually, no. Illinois has a statewide Standing Recommendation for Lactation Services for Illinois Medicaid recipients, which allows eligible Medicaid members to receive recommended lactation services without needing an individual letter or referral from their doctor in most circumstances.

Lactation services may not be appropriate when there is a specific contraindication to breastfeeding or providing expressed breast milk. If a medical condition or other circumstance affects whether breastfeeding is appropriate for you or your baby, your healthcare provider can help determine what is medically appropriate.

Is lactation support available in person?

Currently, Lumaea Wellness provides Meridian Medicaid lactation education and support virtually. You can meet with me from the comfort of your home by secure, HIPAA-compliant video.

Can virtual lactation support really help with breastfeeding?

Yes. Many lactation questions and concerns can be addressed effectively through virtual appointments. During a video visit, we can talk through your feeding history, observe feeding when appropriate, discuss positioning and latch, troubleshoot common breastfeeding challenges, and create a practical plan for what to try next.

Virtual care can also be especially convenient when you're recovering from birth, caring for a newborn, or don't want to pack up the baby and leave home.

What if I need help with latch but you're not physically there to see it?

Virtual lactation support can still provide useful guidance without requiring an in-person visit. With your permission, you can position your camera so I can see you and your baby during a feeding, and I can guide you through positioning, latch, and adjustments in real time. I practice hands-off guidance and support regardless of appointment type because you're the only one who will be there trying to latch during those 3 A.M. feeds.

Can we do a voice only call?

Yes, if you prefer to discuss your needs without a video call, you are more than welcome to request a voice-only call or simply leave your camera off during your appointment.

If you're concerned about privacy, please know that Lumaea uses a HIPAA compliant booking and video-call platform for all video calls, so your privacy is always fully protected.
