Doula Support FAQs
What does a doula do, and how is that different from a midwife or doctor?
A doula provides non-medical support—emotional encouragement, physical comfort measures, and evidence-based information before, during, and after birth. Unlike midwives or doctors, doulas do not perform clinical tasks such as exams, prescribing medication, or delivering babies. Instead, I work alongside your healthcare team to ensure you feel supported, heard, and empowered in your decisions.
What types of births do you support?
I support families in hospitals, birth centers, and home birth settings. My role is to adapt to your chosen environment and help create a safe, respectful, and supported experience, no matter the setting.
Aren't doulas just for unmedicated births?
Not at all! This is one of the biggest misconceptions about doula care. While many people choose a doula to help them navigate labor without pain medication, my role is to support your birth, your way. Whether you are planning for unmedicated, an epidural, an induction, or a cesarean birth (planned or unplanned), having a doula provides a continuous layer of support that clinical staff simply cannot offer.
At Lumaea Wellness, I believe every birthing person deserves to feel empowered and heard. Here is how I support you through different birth paths:
Support with an Epidural
An epidural provides wonderful pain relief, but it doesn't mean "labor is over" until the baby arrives. I help by:
Optimal Positioning: Even with an epidural, movement is key. I use tools like peanut balls and specific "active" movements to help your pelvis stay open and encourage the baby to descend.
Advocacy & Education: I help you understand the "what’s next," from managing blood pressure checks to knowing when it’s time to start pushing.
Physical Comfort: I provide massage for your upper body, cool cloths, and help with the "shivers" or itching that can sometimes accompany an epidural.
Support during a Cesarean Birth
A C-section is a major surgical procedure, and it is still a birth. My support includes:
Pre-Surgical Calm: I help ground you and your partner while you're being prepped, using breathing and mindfulness techniques to lower anxiety.
In the OR (Hospital Policy Permitting): I can be an extra set of hands and a calming voice. If your partner needs to follow the baby to the warmer or the NICU, I stay by your side so you are never alone.
Recovery & Bonding: I facilitate immediate skin-to-skin and provide expert lactation support in the recovery room to help get your nursing journey off to a strong start.
Nurses are incredible, but they often have multiple patients and many clinical tasks (charting, vitals, meds). As your doula, I am the only person in the room whose sole focus is your emotional and physical well-being from the moment labor starts until after your baby is in your arms.
